How does acupuncture work?
In Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is used to bring energy balance to the body by stimulating the complex and fascinating meridian system. Therefore, acupuncture can treat various of medical conditions, prevent illness, and promote health and well-being. More recently, acupuncture has been recognized by western medicine as a scientifically proven means of treating pain and providing relief from many different disease and conditions.
According to Western scientific study, acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous system. Acupuncture needles stimulate specific nerve fibres to carry electrical impulse back to the brain, increasing neurotransmitters and beta-endorphins. This changes the body’s internal chemistry, relieves pain and promote healing, also affects sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride level in the blood, the function of gastrointestinal system and circulation system, and the endocrine system.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is extremely safe. The needles are very fine, sterilized, and disposable. There are no harmful side effects from the treatment. In Quebec, all acupuncturists follow standard sterilization procedures. If you are pregnant, wear a pacemaker, or have metal in your body, please inform your acupuncturist.
How should I prepare for the treatment?
To most benefit from the treatment, you should not come on an empty stomach, or had an unusually big meal, avoid alcoholic or coffee drinks, avoid over excise before or after treatment, bring your test result if you have some.
How does it feel from acupuncture treatment?
Generally, acupuncture does not hurt, but you may experience some minor sensation as the needles insert to the skin. After you may feel some soreness, numbness, or heaviness as the needle get the QI moving. Most patients feel very relaxing, and some even fallen into a deep sleep during treatment. Often I hear patient say "I was really nervous at first, now I am looking forward to my next appointment, the needle didn't hurt and I was relaxed".
You may feel relief of your symptoms after the first treatment. Sometime it may take a few times to see improvement. Occasionally the original symptoms get worse temporary, but it does not need to worry, since these are generally indications that your body is trying to achieve a proper balance. This entirely depends on the individuals and the conditions.
How many treatments do I need?
The number of treatments required depends on the severity and duration of the symptom to be treated. For acute problems, one or two treatments are enough. For chronic conditions, a longer course of treatment is required. We are always working on searching for most effective treatments to help our patients. Normally, within the first 4-6 treatments , the effectiveness of the treatment is often evident and a clear treatment goal should be established.
How long is each treatment?
A typical treatment takes about one hour, but the first treatment will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Will acupuncture conflict with my other medication?
Acupuncture will not conflict with any of your medication. Acupuncture can be use as the only treatment for your conditions, also can be use as a complement and supplement treatment, when you want to get off certain medication, you should discuss this issue with your physician and your acupuncturist.
